Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
