Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
