Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
