Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
