The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
