Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Title in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been won on hardcourt
A revitalized Medvedev claimed his maiden trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult year, winning just one match at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.
His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately parting ways with long-time trainer Cervara.
Now training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has consistently progressed in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought competitive victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This marks the player's maiden championship since the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface since spring of the previous year.
Victory also means Medvedev has won twenty-one victories at 21 distinct competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a competition with my both daughters at once, so to win a trophy is really nice," stated ranked player the champion.
"This title is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, comprising in the German tournament previously this season.
His defensive play style and recurring reactions on the playing surface had led some to question if his capacity to perform at the highest level was finished.
However the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced service.
Medvedev came back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging opponent, securing 4 of the final five points to take the lead.
The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first ATP Tour title, gained dominance to create a decider.
The opponent defended 4 early chances in a close final set before Medvedev broke to 15 to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to control a return after a lengthy match.
